Guest Post: Milda Harris

Heartthrobs in YA Fiction
By
Milda Harris

Heartthrobs: sigh, gasp, swoon! They’re your book crush of the moment – the love interests that make your heart skip a beat and they’re great fun to read about. There is at least one heartthrob in each one of my books and yeah, sometimes there are two because who doesn’t love a good triangle?

In my book Adventures in Funeral Crashing it’s Ethan Ripley , the hottest guy in school, who catches Kait Lenox funeral crashing and ends up asking for her help in solving a murder mystery.  In Doppelganger,  the heartthrob is Aedan Finnegan, a cute guy with red hair, who along with Citrus Leahy finds out he has a doppelganger who is trying to take over his life – dun, dun, dun! In The New Girl Who Found A Dead Body there’s Jake, the nice guy who is the main character, Chloe’s childhood friend turned hottie AND there’s also Grey , the mysterious, rich guy who loves taking photographs and who might have captured the last moments of Lora Kelly alive with his camera.

I like writing about heartthrobs just as much as I love to read about them. It’s always fun to have a book crush. On that note, here are some of my favorite heartthrobs in YA Fiction:

1. Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: Through thick and thin, Peeta helps Katniss and somewhere along the way he became the biggest heatthrob. I didn’t have an opinion about him either way at first, but he grew on me and I liked him more and more as the story went on. The neat thing about him was that Peeta isn’t the strongest guy in the story, but he is very smart and as far as Katniss goes, he liked her all along. I know I wanted to scream at Katniss for being so wishy-washy about him. I would have snapped him up! I do have to note that Finnick Odair also caught my eye. Hey, there can be two book crushes in one book!

2. Harry Potter in the Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling: He may not be your typical heartthrob, but I find Harry oh-so-cute! He’s smart, savvy, he saves the world, and he knows how to do magic! Plus, he has a scar with a great story!

3. Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maude Montgomery: This is one of those classic books that I still love! Although Anne hates Gilbert for the longest time, he’s super smart and I know I had the biggest crush on him! He had me at carrots!

4. Michael Moscovitz from The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot: I guess I’m a sucker for the smart guy because I thought Michael was pretty great. It also helps that Robert Schwartzman did a great job of playing him in the movie version – perfect casting choice!
5. Stefan and Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith: Although it’s been a long time since I’ve read the books, I absolutely love the TV series! I loved the books first, though, and even then Stefan and Damon were both super heartthrobs. Although, I’ll admit, bad boy Damon always had a little bit of an edge over good guy Stefan. There’s something about the bad boy…who you feel like maybe you could turn good!

And, one that I’m looking forward to being introduced to:

7. Tobias “Four” Eaton from Divergent by Veronica Roth: I’ve just heard a lot about him and I’m excited to read the books, so yeah, I’m really looking forward to meeting him!
Who are your book heartthrobs? I’m always on the lookout for another one to add to my list!  Happy reading!

Joint Review: The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

Title:  The Indigo Spell
Author:  Richelle Mead
File type:  hardcover
Release date:  February 12th, 2011
Genre:  YA, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, vampires

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.
Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

Bow to the Vampire Queen Richelle Mead! She did something I didn't expect at all. She  made me love Sydney. I liked her before but after reading those steamy scenes with Adrian she showed me she is capable of changing. Her awkwardness and coldness made me laugh at loud a couple of times and that made think Richelle sure knows what she's doing. I don't even miss Rose that much. I know! Blasphemy!

Bloodlines wasn't my favorite book, The Golden Lily made up for that and finally The Indigo Spell continued on the right direction. I wasn't blown away because nothing monumental happened, except for the kissing scenes which were spectacular. Man, Adrian sure puts up with a lot. Sydney keeps kissing him and then acting so defensive later, like it's forbidden and wrong. That is the only thing that I didn't like about her.

My bb Adrian is amazing as always. He is so protective, 'manly and brave' as Sydney says. He is honest with Sydney from the start and is not going to give up them.  He is also attending his art classes and even gets into a fight with Marcus because of her. *sigh* He looks great in a tucks and his hair is perfectly styled. He doesn't need to be a guardian to kick some serious ass. *double sigh*
Eddie, Jill are even more irrelevant in this novel while Angeline is (always) up to no good. I have no idea how they can put up with her crap because she can't stay out of trouble even for a day. There's always something happening in her life, even if we don't know it at first. Jill toned down her moping and whining and actually starts giving great advices to Sydney. She probably got tired of Sydney jerking Adrian around so much, just like I did.

There's also a new 'character' in The Indigo Spell. His name is Hopper and he is amazing. Don't want to spoil everything/anything.

"It was not in my nature to show violence or try to take another's life. It was, however, in my nature to save my own life and those of my loved ones."

For all my patience and intense anticipation, The Indigo Spell was really disappointing. I have no clue where to start from because there are so many things to point out and so many things to say. But I shall try.

The Indigo Spell started on a great note. It was the classic Richelle Mead move. Introduce the book in such a way that it not only excites you but really entertains you too and you just can't wait to jump into the book and get lost into it. The start was pretty simple, you have the conflict of the plot, you have your main protagonist, you have humour, you have the building of the plot and then you have , Adrian. *dies*
By this time , I'm totally into Adrian the plot and am this greedy old granny who wants to not be disturbed and just wants what she wants right at that moment. It was all very intense.

There are times when you're finally reading a book you were really excited for and while you're reading it, that feeling is really evident that there is something very very wrong and that it's not making you as happy as it should and as it intends to. This was one of those times. The midsection of the book was really bland for me. I'm not saying that this wasn't an enjoyable read because that can never be the case with a book that has Adrian in it. But then again Adrian isn't going to be everywhere! Oh but how I wish that that were the case....

Anywaaaay.

What's worse is that I always ended up comparing the Vampire Academy series to this one and this whole comparing business, further made me not like this book even more. And the conflict? I'm sorry but I felt that the conflict was not that conflicting. I remember the doses of adrenaline I got while reading about Rose battling out the Strigoi or Rose going to hunt Strigoi or the Dimitri-Strigoi hunt or the let's-save-Lissa-stunt that Rose used to always pull or the whole goddamn series for all I know! But in this case, it is not. I know it's not fair to compare both the series or maybe it is or maybe not but honestly, it's the third book..how much longer is it going to take for things to finally take off? Or has the take off already happened because I'm not feeling it.

Another thing I don't like and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be shot for that. Okay. One. *Inhale* *Exhale* Two *Inhale* *Exhale* THREE!

I thought the end was a total cringefest and the Adrian and Sydney love angle? It's a given but I'm not a believer.

OH GOD.

I shall discuss this further with the ones who have read the book but let's just continue for now.

Now where was I? Ah yes--Me and my disappointment. This isn't the classic-est book of all and that's pretty obvious but then there are fun things in it as well!

Hellooooo Adrian. *Whistles at him like a perv*

Adrian was his amazing self. Eddie was almost non-existent. Jill was well...Jill. Angeline was Angeline. And Trey was Trey , Ms. Terwilliger is a total badass and the character of Marcus Finch shows promise.
There were situations that did get me pumped up! Like the Jill-Eddie-Angeline love triangle. Oh dude. I am totally backing the direction it's going in. And Sydney's character has had a serious growth spurt.
I'm telling you. She isn't as annoying as she used to be and sounds a little human. And even though I found the book bland when it came to the matter of conflict and plot, the things in the book show signs of a pretty good storyline in future. Like for example, the Alchemist and Warriors of Light mystery and Jill's future. So things look pretty okay for now but then they always do. I'm hoping for a Shadow Kiss moment where I just die and go to paradise but that moment hasn't shown up yet and I'm seriously waiting for it. Seriously.

You must be wondering, dude what about the Sydrian moments?
Oh they're pretty good. VERY GOOD actually.
I was literally hyperventilating while reading. So much intensity. So much NEED. All our wait for those Sydrian moments has paid off. *sings*

Adrian is so sexy. *coughs*

ADRIAN IS A BOMB. bombbombombbombbombbomb.
I want to have Adrian for myself. That's what I want. I want him. Give me him. I demand him. Oh dear lord.

I WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW. I need. I neeeeeed.

  3. Melina Marchetta- Nuff said.
  4. Stephanie Perkins- Her books always bring a smile to my face and warm my gold Capricorn heart. Love her!
  5. Susan Ee- I spend a lot of money to that thin paperback copy of Angelfall so it's pretty obvious I would do anything to get her book in my hands.

I feel kind of stupid right now because all my picks mirror Zemira's. All of them.

1. Melina Marchetta- Forever and always.
2. Tarryn Fisher- Lady. You can throw anything at me. ANYTHING. You gave us The Opportunist and as always, I want more.

Book Review: The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

Title:  The Golden Lily
Author:  Richelle Mead
File type:  hardcover
Release date:  June 12th, 2011
Genre:  YA, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, vampires

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.
Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she’s been sent into hiding at a posh boarding school in Palm Springs, California–tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist.
But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age–old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and the sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, the ones who don’t die. But it’s her fear of being just that—special, magical, powerful—that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Brayden, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else—someone forbidden to her.
When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney’s loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she's supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she's been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her.
Should she trust the Alchemists—or her heart?

Before I start writing the review I need to point something out. The cover for Bloodlines and The Golden Lily should be switched. Why? On every cover we have Sydney and someone else. So, IMO Jill should have been on the Bloodlines one and Adrian should be on the The Golden Lily because that way the cover would match its storyline.

I didn’t started reading this book with high expectations cause I was disappointed with the first instalment. Maybe I expected it would be like Vampire Academy which I adore. Maybe I wanted Sydney to be more like Rose. But VA days are over (for now).

What is new in this book? Well. Sydney has her own room now. Angeline is staying with Jill. Adrian is having trouble with accepting the fact Dimitri and Sonya are doing their research at his place. Also, it seems like Sydney and Adrian are spending more time together and are getting along pretty well considering they are two very different individuals. But if you look closely, you can tell they have similar problems-with their fathers. They are insecure and feel misunderstood.

Sydney made me laugh a couple of times. She would say so funny things with a straight face I couldn’t help myself and crack up. She is still on a diet even though she is size 4. I can’t remember when I…nevermind. Syd used to panic when others were talking about vampires but I feel like she is finally ready to call Jill, Eddie and Adrian her friends and not just vamps.

Jill was, ahh, well, Jill. Not much has changed about her since Bloodlines. She is still that girl who always has a boyfriend. The fact that she is 15 does not mean she should not use her brain. I swear, sometimes, she acts like a freaking monkey. She is all smiling-blushing- head-bowing bimbo.

As for Adrian. *sigh* My tortured prince. He surprised me. He has grown some serious balls. *snickers* He is trying to stay away from alcohol and cigarettes. But it doesn’t always go smoothly. It’s a day by day battle. He is also working on his paintings. Who could be responsible for this improvement?

All in all, I was not disappointed The Golden Lily. It was slow paced and for once I had no problem with that fact. I enjoyed every scene. It was worth the wait.

Book Review: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Title:  Bloodlines
Author:  Richelle Mead
File type:  paperback
Release date:  August 25th, 2011
Genre:  YA, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, vampires

Sydney protects vampire secrets - and human lives.
Sydney belongs to a secret group who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the world of humans and vampires.
But when Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, she fears she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. What unfolds is far worse. The sister of Moroi queen Lissa Dragomir is in mortal danger, and goes into hiding. Now Sydney must act as her protector.
The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one...

I was SUPER excited about Bloodlines. SUPER! SUPER!!! Most of us who read this book or soon-to are either huge fans of the VA series or just stragglers hopping on board after we convinced them that this book is going to be epic.
I can tell you now that all it ended up being was an epic disappointment. It is really hard for me to say this,it really is. But I did not love it as much as I though I would.

Lets start with Sydney. I had a problem with her. She is a type of person I wouldn't like to hang out with. Sydney wasn't a great choice of narrator, and constantly got on my nerves. The fact that during VA we had this strong, caring, determined badass chick as an minor character has given us certain expectations. No matter what I think of her for what she did at the end, we respect her, admire her and to be frank, she's pretty awesome. And then we are presented with this judgemental, spineless girl who thinks she's better than everyone else and who is pretty useless in my opinion. I did not connect with her as much as I did with Adrian.

And Adrian, well, it's pretty obvious that I love Adrian and I am more than enjoying his company here because he was the only character who hadn't changed. I kept thinking just one thing while reading parts with him-Adrian is the male version of me(except for the drinking and smoking)!

Then we have Jill...Jill is Lissa's replacement who is even more useless. Jill is even more selfish and careless than Lissa. Should I judge her? She is fifteen and is dealing with a lot. There were so many guys all over her. Shouldn't one guy be enough? The whole scenario with her and all these boys just came out of nowhere and it seemed pretty unrealistic. I felt bad about Eddie. He was just a sweetheart and he deserves better.

Compared to Vampire Academy, Bloodlines was boring because there wasn't much action yet I know Richelle still isn't done with this storyline. I'm going to be more open minded and go along with what I got. This was just the beginning of the spin-off.

One of the big let-down points I'm going to point out was that, the plot was a predictable. While reading, I didn't get surprised.I almost immediately saw there was something fishy going on with Lee. Shouldn't the villain be the least person you would suspect?

I have so many conflicted thoughts on this book. Maybe I'm being unfair. After all it's the first book in the series, and I am sure Sydney will grow on me, and maybe I should just accept the fact she's not our favorite bad ass girl Rose, but it's not that simple.

Since The Golden Lily is already pre-ordered I just hope it will be better than Bloodlines.

And what do you guys think about the last sentence? I was like KICK HIS ASS ADRIAN!!! Russian Gods are overrated! :D

Bloggy News/Stacking the Shelves

I got approved for Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead. It was the biggest surprise this week. Didn't even expect I would get it because publishers keep ignoring me when it comes to those super hyped books. So far, the book itself is going rather slow and I can't connect with the characters but I won't give up. The only Mead series I didn't enjoy was Dark Swan.

Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Title:  Shatter Me
Author:  Tahereh Mafi
File type:  hardback
Release date:  November 15th, 2011
Genre:  YA, dystopia, romance

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

How awesome was this book? Well,I am going to tell you. Pretty darn awesome!

I am not very good at convincing people to read the books I loved so I am going to write this review without any pressure.

Here are some arguments:

1. if you are (like myself) a fan of X-Men,you will love it,or else...

2. If you are (like myself) a fan of strong and smart leading character like Juliet, you will love it.

3. If you are (like myself) a fan of totally shagable and caring guy like Adam, you will love it.

4. If you are (like myself) a fan of crazy and demented bad guy who actually happens to be smoking hot(and in love with our girl Juliet),you will love it.

5. If you are (like myself) a fan of almost kissing or almost doing it scenes, then you will love it.
If that wasn't enough for you, than you have no soul suck.

I love the guys in this book. Adam has tattoos and muscles but Warner is also hot in a I-will-kill-you kind of way. He reminds me of hotter and more dangerous version of Tom Felton if that is even possible. I mean look at this

Is it getting hot in here,or is it just me?
“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”
“All I ever wanted was to reach out and touch another human being not just with my hands but with my heart.”
“I'm oxygen and he's dying to breathe.”
“One word, two lips, three four five fingers form a fist. One corner, two parents, three four five reasons to hide. One child, two eyes, three four seventeen years of fear.A broken broomstick, a pair of wile faces, angry whispers, locks on my door.”

Tahereh is just unbelievably talented and this book has been a favorite from the moment I read the first chapter. I just knew it would be a huge hit.

Top Ten Tuesday #8

Top Ten Characters in the Dystopian Genre.
The past week had been a tad hectic and this week seems to start on the same note. For this week's TTT , Zemira couldn't be present as she had some personal chores to handle. So I'll be flying Solo this week which in a way is quite jarring because I've always had to just list out five of my favourite things! And it's perfect because two people together , shows different perspectives and tastes. Which kind of rocks. Anyhow. This week as you can see is about the Top Ten Characters in X genre, and even though I'm a total contemporary cookie, All my favourite characters come from genres that are..well..not contemporary. My favourites are mostly from the Dystopian and fantasy and post apocalyptic worlds , but surprisingly Dystopia beats all. So let's start shall we?

1. Katniss Everdeen
from The Hunger Games- I think, for me, the YA genre officially started with the  Hunger Games trilogy. Maybe because it was the first of it's kind (atleast for me) or maybe because it was just , in the right words, awesome? but Katniss Everdeen, for me ,is the evergreen symbol of awesomeness. So much action , So much fire , So much Passion! Oh I'm so happy Ms. Collins was born.

“I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own. That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I.”

2. Dani O' Malley
from Iced: The fever series- Somehow, I can't help but just love this kid. She is so cool. Super strength, Super power, Super hearing, Super running and the use of the English language in the worst way possible in contrast to her intelligent and more mature side is a lovely treat to read about. She's just fourteen yet she would throw herself in front of a stranger to save him or her. She is strong and stubborn yet as it is with teenagers, it isn't hard to see her vulnerable side as well. Ps- I'm pretty sure that the book isn't dystopian , but what the hell.

"This is my world and fecking Fae is taking it from me."

3. Tris Prior
from The Divergent series: Another one of my favourite leading ladies. Even though Tris and I have had a very turbulent relationship, I can't help but relate to her impulsiveness and in some cases, sheer stupidity. Somehow.

"
I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless.
I am Divergent.
And I can’t be controlled."

4. Warner
from The Shatter Me series- I'm not sure what his first name is. I think it hasn't even been mentioned. yet. Warner is...my kind of dark chocolate. After reading the novella from his point of view, I can't help but like him more and more. So much vulnerability, so much love, so much conflict and he's still manages to be a badass. How cool is that?

“Watching her talk to someone else made me crazy. I was jealous. Ridiculous. I wanted her to know me; I wanted her to talk to me. And I felt it then: this strange, inexplicable sense that she might be the only person in the world I could really care about.”

5. Penryn
from Penryn and The End of the World series- Oh yes. I'm a feminist. Another badass female whose decisions actually make sense.

"I never thought about it before, but I’m proud to be
human. We’re ever so flawed. We’re frail, confused, violent,
and we struggle with so many issues. But all in all, I’m proud
to be a Daughter of Man. "

6. Perry
from Under The Never Sky series- Oh lord this guy. THIS GUY. I think I had drool on my face while I was reading Through The Ever Night. His love for Aria , his strength, his belief , he himself! For all I know , I'd munch him alive.

“It didn't matter if Aria was hundreds of miles away, or whether she'd hurt him, or said goodbye, or anything else. Nothing would change the way he felt. The moment Aria had taken his hand on the roof at Marron's, she'd changed everything. No matter what happened, she'd always be the one.”

7. Heron
from the Partials series- We were introduced to Heron in Partials but our initial introduction was really brief. After reading the novella, Isolation War which btw is from her PoV , I can already see her playing a pivotal role in the cominh books. And also because she's totally badass.

We are at war," said the voice," a war we must win at all costs ; you know that-"
"What I want you to do," said Heron softly , " is to think long and hard about this. You made us to kill and conquer, and we are doing it better than you ever anticipated. Far better than you could ever do yourselves. You are no match for us. Do not make us your enemy." She stared into the darkness and a wicked smile crept into the corners of her lips , "Confirm?"

8. Julian
from The Delirium trilogy- While everyone likes Lena and Alex, I seriously can't help but fall for this guy. All his life he's lived in a world with absolutely no knowledge of what it feels like to be in love and when he finally does , shit comes his way. Yet he goes on. And I like that about him. I can't wait for Requiem to see how things finally pan out!

”Lena?”
”Yes Julian ?”
“What does it feel like ?”
“What are you talking about ?”
“The Deliria ?”
“I-I can’t describe it ..”
“I want to know .” his whispered “I want to know with you.”

9. Alex
from the Delirium trilogy- Hellooo, he sacrificed himself for Lena? How can you not love this guy. xD

“Are you sure that being like everybody else will make you happy?"-Alex
"I don't know any other way."-Lena
"Let me show you."-Alex

10. Raphael
from Penryn and the End of Days- 'Don't talk about her.'
Oh god I think I can never forget this one particular line. Like Ever. An angel. Complete hottie. smart mouth. Hot mouth. Mouth?.
And totally badass.

“How long did you resist?” asks Uriel. “Did you push her away? Did you tell her she meant no more to you than any other animal? Oh, Raffe, did she die thinking you didn’t care about her? How tragic. That must just tear you to pieces.”

Raffe looks up with murder in his eyes. “Don’t. Talk. About. Her.”

OOOOh. SO MUCH LOVE.
